So I was lucky enough to get an AT&T iPhone 5 on launch day. It’s a white 32gig. Those are the facts, now here’s my opinion, that’s what you pay the big bucks to read my blog for, right… Here it is. It’s Great.
No really, I’m loving it. For starters, it feels great in the hand, it’s shockingly light and the edges feel more rounded then the iPhone 4/4S though it doesn’t look that way. I thought the height was going to be an issue but it’s far from it. The lock/power button is still within easy reach.
iOS 6 which is the new operating system that comes on the iPhone 5, remember you can update your older iPhone as far back as the 3GS, though peoples experiences have varied. Anyways, iOS 6 is fighter jet fast especially with AT&T’s LTE, it is still iOS though, not much has changed since 2007. There are starred contacts now in the email app and Do Not Disturb settings but beyond that not much else has changed from iOS 5 except for a little bit of the shading of core apps and the dial pad. Still it’s super fast and responsive.
The most important new feature for me is the camera, I have 2 young kids and I love taking pictures of them. I don’t have an SLR and my point and shoot though nice isn’t with me 99% of the time. The camera on the iP5 is fantastic. It’s extremely fast to open and focuses almost instantly. I’m amazed at the picture quality. I always carried an iPhone 4 but typically on the weekends would also carry a Samsung Galaxy S3 or HTC One X for their imaging capabilities. Not any more, I’m down to 1 phone and love it. Plug Alert: Plus I have my work number on my phone thanks to Phone.com.
A few little niggles are that the headphone jack is on the bottom. I understand why it’s there but I don’t listen to much music on my phone but I do put it in my car’s cup holder every single day and having the jack on the bottom now is a pain. Also the charging/data port. No more 30 pin connector. I don’t mind that, onward and upward but couldn’t Apple have gone with the world wide micro USB standard, at least for charging? I don’t care if I need a special Apple cord for data though keep it micro USB, just allow me to charge off any standard charging cord!!! Same for the new micro sim, I get it but I’m upset I don’t have any other phones that use the new 4th Form Factor or micro sim as it’s commonly referred to.
Lastly battery life has been ok. It’s not fantastic but it seems to be a lot better then my iPhone 4 used to be. That’s a good thing because I only have 1 charger for the iPhone and it’s on my nightstand.
All in all this phone is fantastic. It’s not by any means a revolution like the original iPhone was in 2007 or the 4 was but it’s a nice evolution. It’s missing 1 important feature, NFC, this could really hurt Apple more then it hurts the public. I’ve talked to a few people that are upset about that are are getting a Galaxy S3 instead.
That’s it, that’s all I can think of to report to you right now. It’s magical, I’m under Steve’s spell. Go buy it now and get it from AT&T. Yes that’s another plug, you’re so perceptive, they got me pizza on launch day and have been known to give me cool stuff in S.W.A.G. bags though never phones. Jeez I feel cheap. Well the plugs are a credit to Meredith Red my AT&T contact, PR hacks take note, treat me like a person, not a printing press.
